How to provide your No Claims Discount proof: a step-by-step guide
Drivers in the UK get a discount on their car insurance for every year they drive without making a claim. It’s often called a No Claims Discount (NCD).
However, it’s important to remember that you only get a discount for the years you can prove you’ve not made a claim. If there have been years that you’ve driven without car insurance, these years won’t count.
So if you’ve had car insurance for five years without making a claim, you could get five years’ No Claims Discount.
Most insurers only accept No Claims Discount earned in the UK — but that’s where we’re different. We can accept proof of claim-free driving from non-UK insurers. You just need to show us what a safe driver you are by sending us the right documents.
Just follow these three steps.
1. Get your proof of No Claims Discount
We know not every country gives you the same documents as proof of accident-free driving. That’s why we let you prove your claims-free driving in lots of different ways.
You’ll need a document from your previous insurer that shows:
- The number of No Claims Discount years. It might also be called Bonus Malus.
- Details of any claim.
- Policy start and expiry date.
- The telephone number, email address, and postal address of the insurer.
As long as it has those details, we can accept any of these documents as your proof of No Claims:
Proof of No Claims Discount (NCD) letter
After each year of claim-free driving in the UK you’ll be sent a ‘Proof of No Claims Discount’ letter. Sometimes it’s called a ‘Certificate of No Claims’, but it means the same thing.
We can accept a proof of NCD letter from UK insurers, or insurers from other countries.
Closing statement
If your previous insurer sent you a closing statement, you can use that to prove your claims-free driving years.
Schedule of insurance with a percentage (%) discount
Does your schedule of insurance from your home country show NCD as a percentage? That’s fine – you can still use it as proof.
Renewal invitations
You can send us your most recent renewal statement from your insurer in your home country.
2. Upload your No Claims Discount proof
Now to get your document to us. It’s really easy with the Marshmallow app.
Find your policy in the app and tap ‘Documents’. Follow the instructions to upload your document. We prefer a PDF, but if you’ve had to photograph or scan paper documents you can also upload those.
You need to get your document uploaded to the app within seven days.
3. We’ll take care of it
If we need anything else, we’ll let you know.
Otherwise, we’ll work to validate your documents and driving history.
We’ll have your document checked over within seven days and that’s it – No Claims Discount applied.
Answers to important questions
Everything else you need to know about proving your claims-free driving history.
What if I don’t have any documents?
Maybe your previous insurer didn’t send you any documents when your policy ended. Or you can’t find them.
Just get in touch with them and ask for a copy of one of the documents we’ve listed. Just as long as it shows how long you’ve had car insurance and any claims you’ve made.
We can’t give you a claims-free driving discount without proof, so it’s definitely worth a quick call or email.
What if I haven’t been insured for a while?
We understand you might have had a break from driving when you moved here. That’s okay. As long as your document shows that your most recent car insurance policy ended within the last three years, we can still apply a claims-free discount.
Can you accept documents from a broker?
We need to see a document from the insurer themselves. We can’t accept any letters or documents from a broker or a friend that took out the policy for you.
If you bought your policy through an insurance agent it’s helpful if you can give us their contact details though.
Do I need to get my documents translated?
No. Send us your original documents, even if they’re in another language, and we’ll take care of it.
Why have you rejected my document?
There’s a problem with your document and we can’t accept it as proof of No Claims. If you don’t think that’s right, get in touch with us on Live Chat and we’ll look into it for you.
I didn’t need car insurance in my country – can I get a discount?
Unfortunately no. You need to have had car insurance previously to get a No Claims Discount.
