Ford insurance groups explained

Ford insurance groups explained: Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo and more

If you’re a Ford driver - or thinking about becoming one now you live in the UK - understanding your car’s insurance group can help you save money before you even get a quote.

Ford cars are some of the most popular among UK drivers, especially with new arrivals looking for reliable, affordable models. And luckily, many Ford models fall into lower insurance groups.

Here’s everything you need to know.

How do insurance groups work?

Every car model in the UK is placed into a group from 1 to 50:

  • Group 1 = Cheapest to insure
  • Group 50 = Most expensive to insure

Insurance groups are based on things like:

  • Cost to repair
  • Ease of sourcing parts
  • Security features
  • Safety ratings
  • Engine size and performance

The lower the number, the cheaper the insurance - simple as that.

Ford Fiesta insurance groups

Who doesn’t love a Ford Fiesta? They’re often a favourite for first-time drivers and UK newcomers alike because they’re affordable, reliable and relatively cheap to fix.

Be careful when picking your model though. Mostly depending on the size of the engine, some Ford Fiestas fall into a higher car insurance group.

  • Fiesta Zetec 1.25L: Group 5–6
  • Fiesta Titanium 1.0L EcoBoost: Group 10–12
  • Fiesta ST-Line 1.5L: Group 15–17

Top tip: Stick to models with smaller engines if you want a cheaper price.

Ford Focus insurance groups

The Ford Focus is bigger and a bit more powerful than the Fiesta - but it can still sit in some reasonable insurance groups.

  • Focus Zetec 1.6L: Group 10–13
  • Focus Titanium 1.0L: Group 11–14
  • Focus ST models: Group 25+

Top tip: Look for Focus models with smaller engines and fewer trim upgrades for better insurance prices.

Ford Ka and Ka+ insurance group

Compact, simple and ideal for city driving, the Ford Ka has long been one of the cheapest Fords to insure.

  • Ford Ka 1.2L Style/Studio: Group 3–4
  • Ford Ka+ 1.2L Zetec: Group 5–6

These fall into some of the lowest insurance groups on the market - ideal for younger drivers, or newcomers to UK roads.

Ford Mondeo insurance group

If you need something larger for family or motorway driving, the Ford Mondeo might be on your list.

  • Mondeo Zetec 1.6L EcoBoost: Group 17–19
  • Mondeo Titanium 2.0L: Group 19–22
  • Mondeo Vignale or Hybrid models: Group 24+

Larger engines and high-end trims mean higher insurance costs. But for experienced drivers with a good claims record, they’re still a solid options.

Ford EcoSport insurance group

The EcoSport is Ford’s compact SUV - a popular choice for drivers who want a little more space but still want to keep insurance costs down.

  • EcoSport 1.0L Titanium: Group 11–13
  • EcoSport 1.5L Diesel or ST-Line: Group 14–16

Does the insurance group affect the cost of your car insurance?

Yes - but it’s not the only thing that matters. Your car’s insurance group is one of several factors insurers use to work out your price.

Some other things that affect your price include:

  • Your age and driving history
  • Where you live
  • Where the car is parked
  • Your licence and claims history (from any country!)
